Let's talk about detox, shall we?
It's no secret that summer draws to a painful end, thus it's the best time to take a break from your recent "bad" eating habits (too much alcohol, french fries and ice-cream maybe?) and think about detox. Yep, it's that time of the year.
Personally , I spend 3 to 7 days detoxifying my body once in a while; I think more than that can harmful to your health and general wellbeing. The body needs some days to cleanse, thus I tend to drink plenty of water, fresh smoothies, eat tons of veggies and fruits, avoid meat, poultry, milk - although almond milk is allowed in smoothies - yoghurt and anything artificial. However, you need to be careful. It is typical this time of the year to keep coming across countless advertisements about the process of "correct" detox or cleansing. Some programs are ok, but you have to know that nature has provided us with its natural remedies and superfoods without going to extremes.
Here's a list of my very personal favourite superfoods, all 5 of them; add some of the following to your daily diet and you will see immediate changes in your skin, mood and general body image. You will feel so much better, I can promise you that.
The cousin to cucumbers and pumpkins (!!!) is believed to be originated in Egypt close to 5,000 years ago. It is my personal favourite summer fruit and ideal for detoxing. It is rich in lycopene, (yes, that famous, powerful caretinoid antioxidant that gives food the colour red e.g. tomatoes) more than any other fruit or vegetable and can relieve muscle soreness (I always tend to consume it after working out - it hydrates me to the fullest) and that is because it is made up of more than 90% water. It also reduces blood pressure and is rich in anti-inflammatory substances. And now probably one of its best benefits; it promotes weight loss - YES, IT DOES.
Lemon is the #1 detox choice of the most. I personally use it all year long on a daily basis; I drink it as a juice in the morning, in order to remove toxins that have gathered in my body during night sleep, as well as during the day when I pour lemon juice into water.
Some of its benefits include;
- assisting in weight loss by removing all waste toxins from the body.
- making the skin brighter, removing wrinkles and blackheads.
- helping cure problems related to indigestion and constipation, amongst other things.
The delicious sweet and earthy red beets are indeed nature's powerhouse. They are responsible for lowering blood pressure, boosting our stamina, fighting inflammation, thus protecting our internal organs. They are also widely known for their anti-cancer properties; they are high in Vitamin C, fiber as well as Potassium and Magnesium. Last but not least, beets are highly valued for their support to purifying the blood and liver.
Yes, you read correctly. Garlic is totally worth mentioning and you won't believe its superfood properties; not only has unbelievably powerful, antiseptic and antibiotic properties, but also stimulates the liver to get rid of all the toxins. As they say, " go garlic or go home".
If you don't won't to incorporate it into your diet, you can also find garlic in the form of pills or bottled capsules in all pharmacies.
5. Green Tea
It is widely known that green tea assists the body's detoxification process, as it's a big source of antioxidants one of which are the famous catechins. Green tea also is a major contributor to a flat belly. Try to drink green tea all day long; put some ice, lemon or lime and some basil and you got yourself a pure drinkable medicine!
